KABUL (IRNA) -- Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for the Asia-Pacific and Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs Mehdi Safari left Afghanistan for Tehran on Monday after a two-day visit.

While in Afghanistan, Safari and Afghan President Hamed Karzai and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Yunis Qanooni as well as some Afghan officials discussed a host of issues, including expansion of bilateral relations and repatriation of Afghan refugees illegally residing in Iran.

The two sides stressed gradual and regular repatriation of the Afghans who hold invalid residence permits.

An Afghan delegation is to visit Iran to survey the repatriation process.

Karzai during the meeting with Safari re-extended an invitation to President Mahmud Ahmadinejad to visit Afghanistan.

Iranian president is scheduled to visit Afghanistan by June at the head of a ranking delegation.
